Our newest rice bag bird the Kaua'i 'Amakihi pictured on 'A'ali'i. Both the 'A'ali'i and 'Amakihi are known for their adaptability and resilience
There are three different types of 'Amakihi; the Kaua'i species, the O'ahu species, and the Hawai'i island species. We chose to do the Kaua'i 'Amakihi for this shirt.
A snippet from Kauaiforestbirds.org:
"The Kaua’i ‘amakihi are generalists, feeding on insects, nectar, and fruit. They can be seen foraging along branches and trunks for insects, where they utilize their strong claws to help them climb. They nest exclusively in ‘ōhi‘a trees, and are most common in ‘ōhi‘a forests, especially those with a strong koa component. Historically common across the whole island, it is now found only in high elevation forests in the Alaka’i Wilderness and Kōke’e region."
Given, that the Kaua'i 'Amakihi can be found in Kōke'e, we chose to supplement the design with 'A'ali'i flowers and foliage.
